Napole\u00e3o Bonaparte enviou os seus melhores generais para alcan\u00e7ar tal objectivo, mas as investidas n\u00e3o produziram os resultados desejados. Estas invas\u00f5es permanecem na mem\u00f3ria colectiva do nosso povo. S\u00e3o muitas as hist\u00f3rias de coragem que se contam e uma delas envolve os frades do nosso Convento de Santo Ant\u00f3nio (Actual Convento da Sert\u00e3 Hotel). Tudo aconteceu em 1810, quando os franceses tentaram invadir o pa\u00eds pela terceira vez. Os frades do convento, liderados por Frei Ant\u00f3nio de Santa B\u00e1rbara, escreveram \u00e0 Coroa, oferecendo a sua ajuda para a defesa de uma ponte, que se encontrava pr\u00f3xima do convento (a ponte filipina), dos ataques das tropas de Napole\u00e3o Bonaparte. A carta, cujo original se encontra no Arquivo Hist\u00f3rico Militar, narrava que os religiosos, \u201ctodos ainda mo\u00e7os\u201d, desejando \u201cmostrar o seu patriotismo\u201d, recorrem a \u201csua Alteza Real para que lhes mande dar treze espingardas, baionetas, tra\u00e7ados, e as muni\u00e7\u00f5es necess\u00e1rias para defender aquella ponte, por ser a mais importante da villa\u201d. O rei n\u00e3o correspondeu \u00e0 solicita\u00e7\u00e3o, temendo provavelmente pela seguran\u00e7a dos religiosos.
